Originally established in the 1880s by Mr. Collins, The Hotel—later known as the Hydro and eventually the Hogsback Inn—carries a rich history.

In 1925, renowned artist Mr. W.G. Wiles purchased the then-dilapidated property from Holshausen, relinquishing its license and rebranding it as the Hydro, breathing new life into this storied landmark.

Renowened Artist

He transformed the site, creating the first swimming pool in Hogsback, a landmark of its time.

AE Burton’s “Cape Colony Today” (1907) vividly recounts the era, with post carts journeying from Alice to Fort Beaufort in a four-in-hand Cape cart, capturing the essence of a bygone era.

He described the breathtaking descent from the ridge, where the Tyumie Valley and Amatola Basin unfolded in panoramic splendor. The hotel, serving as the hub of the area with its store, market, and post office, was surrounded by orchards brimming with apples, pears, peaches, and plums. Burton noted, ‘Never since Devonshire have we tasted or seen apples that could rival those at Hogsback.’

It’s being said that we have one of the best baths in town. And although we are flattered to hear that, we think that every guest has to form their own opinion.
